"The first" of Hijab's

The Hijab is becoming an icon to media representation. There have been many "firsts" of women embracing their hijab and the media being the first to congratulate them. With all the hate that is going on, the media helps promote those who choose to express themselves through religion and do not feel afraid while doing so. These women are brave, and deserve to be recognized.

Gisela Massa made history when she became the first TV news reporter to wear a hijab while doing her job. Massa hopes to open doors to other women, she explains that all her co workers treat her with respect and that its sad that some muslim women do not get this respect. For Massa, she says, “I need to continue what I’m doing because for some this may be the only interaction they ever have with a Muslim woman in hijab, and maybe it will change their perception about who we are and what we can do"

Halima Aden, is the first to compete in miss USA wearing a hijab, although she did not win, she says she wants to help disprove the misconception of her culture. The Hijab is not to be seen as a degrading form of style, but an encouraging, powerful, unique way of dress. Halima states, "people do bad things, but that does not represent the entire culture group"

Nura Afia, is the first hijab wearing cover girl ambassador, she states, “I felt it had to be some sort of joke given they had never had an observant Muslim campaign face before.” Nura is now seen on billboards in Time Square, and be the face of 100's of campaign companies around the world. the Muslim personal cosmetics and care market is now worth more than $54 billion, a figure that is expected to reach $80 billion by 2020 (NY TIMES).

“There are millions of Muslim women who are very keen to both express their faith and also appear fashion forward. Self-presentation using makeup — particularly if they choose to wear a head scarf — is key to how they feel they can fit into wider society.” (Nura Afia)

It is improtant that we understand that it is not easy for Muslim women especially during the recent campaigns, to publically display their religion, but these three women have embraced, and wore their hijab to better themselves, their community, and to show the media tha tthe typical stereotypes they have acquired are not true for all Muslims.
